How Wide and Long and High and Deep is God’s Love?
Ephesians 3:14-19 (NASB)
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. (emphasis mine)
Paul is praying in Ephesians that we, the body of Christ, might comprehend the uncomprehendable (new word alert). How Wide is God’s Love? How Long and high and deep? We get a few clues in Psalm 103:10-12.
10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
We see that God’s love is as high as the heavens are above the Earth! So far, science has discovered galaxies about 14 billion light years away (give or take a few light years). Do the math on that height! Width? Start walking east. You could circle the Earth a zillion times and still not meet west. Start walking west. You would always be heading west even if you walked forever. The width of God’s Love is endless.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 tells us what love is:
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 John 4:16 tell us that God IS Love!
16 We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
If God is Love then 1 Corinthians 13 is describing the wonderful attributes of God that know no boundaries. Remember also that it is this unending love that God has for you!
There is so much more to say about the goodness and the love of God, but please spend some time reflecting on these verses and let God speak to your heart about His Love that He has for you. Remember that as you receive God’s Love to share it with those around you. His love is so great that we can’t help but let it overflow our hearts into the lives of others.
